Car GPS - know the road ahead of you!

By David C Skul

Only the luxury cars have a car GPS system nowadays, but that is about to change because due to the new technologies the price for the car GPS is going to lower, some cheaper systems can already be found on the market. Probably in the nearby future the car GPS is going to be integrated in all car models, just like the radio. A car GPS (global positioning system) is a device that can detect your position anywhere on the planet (it uses satellites to do that), and has built-in maps of all the major roads, airports, restaurants, train stations and all the other useful information you need when you are on the road. You can program locations ,like your home, for example, and the car GPS will calculate the shortest route that takes you there. Furthermore, it can help a lot in cases of accidents or if your car has been stolen. Once you've used a car GPS you won't want to drive without one again.

Technology has improved a lot since the first car GPS devices were released and now they integrate a lot of auxiliary functions, detailed geographic information, they permanently calculate all routes and display the facilities around.

So, if you decide to buy a car GPS, you have to carefully choose between the models so that youll find the one that best fits your needs. They have both advantages and disadvantages. One problem that can be disturbing for some people is the size of the car GPS device, because they can obstruct the drivers view of the windshield. Another thing that you may want to consider is the simplicity of the device, how easy to operate it is, and how explicit its users manual is. Its accuracy must also be considered. There are many other characteristics that you may wish to discuss, so the best thing is to read some car GPS reviews on the Internet and find the best one for you.

The sure thing is that youll never have any problems with your route and youll never get lost if you have a car GPS as your navigation assistant with you on the road.

Durability of the GPS Unit...If you are rough with your gear, consider a rugged GPS unit that has durable casing and can sustain bumps & drops without compromising its functionality. Many models are shockproof and waterproof, in differing degrees. If you ever plan to use your GPS receiver while boating, then you may want to get one that actually floats. And remember, in cold weather, your GPS system will continue to provide accurate data, however, the LCD display screens tend to display the information quite slowly.

Your GPS receiver needs a 30-second message from each satellite to use it for navigation. During this time, the signal strength bar is hollow, and the satellite is not usable. Once a complete message is received, the signal bar turns solid and the satellite is "locked". Your receiver may remember a locked satellite for several hours, even while turned off, making acquisition quicker the next time.

Global Positioning System (GPS) is a navigational aid originally urbanized for the military. If you have used a map or compass, you will understand a little about how the GPS works. In order to find your location on a map, you will need to have three points of reference. The point where these connect will show your location. While map and scope work use triangulation (bearings), GPS uses trilateration (distances) to pinpoint location. Satellites orbiting the earth emit sole signals that can be detected by a GPS. The GPS software interprets the signal, identifying the satellite that it came from, where it was located, and the time that it took for the signal to be detected by the system.

Global Positioning Systems offer everything from hole overviews to Internet access "Shortgrass Technologies' Internet-based sports information system and financial ticker enables golfers to check college football scores on a Saturday afternoon or the price of stocks any weekday. Global positioning systems can track golf cars no matter where they are on the course, thus discovering bottlenecks and slower play. Golfers can order beverages and food en route to the turn, so golf clubs can offer more than a quick hot dog - a higher priced chicken sandwich, for instance...."

I always thought that GPS would go mainstream in automobiles first, and in a way I suppose it has, but maybe golfers will lead the real charge. I could have used a portable, library-centered GPS system myself to navigate the Chicago Public Library's Harold Washington Library when I was there last fall!

Qualcomm's Vision of the Wireless Future "When he finished, there were 20 brand-new, CDMA-based mobile handsets and devices arrayed on the table, the high-tech souvenirs of Belk's most recent trip to Hong Kong and Japan.... 'These are not PowerPoint slides,' Belk said. 'These are real devices that are already shipping in volume in Asia.' " at Business 2.0]

And there's the rub. When I do my presentations, that's all I have - pictures of prototypes or of devices not available in the U.S. Europe and Asia really are 18 months ahead of us in this area.

"Beale also discussed Qualcomm's gpsOne location technology.... It also opens the door for many new location-based services, such as traffic information and local weather forecasts. On Japan KDDI's network, there are already more than 20 location-based services available -- all of which are relatively inexpensive, costing less than $5 per month."

I'm looking forward to being able to travel and have information come to me automatically based on my location. For example, if I'm at a conference and I'm looking for a restaurant, I'd like my phone/PDA/whatever to know where I am and offer a list of nearby choices. Maybe it should tell me what movies or plays are on tonight and if there are still tickets available. You get the idea....

"Predictably, both Belk and Beale anticipate strong growth for the wireless industry as ever-more-compelling products and services become available and the industry settles on a single communication standard. How long will that take? Belk, whose career began in the personal computing business in 1983, likened the wireless industry today to the PC business of the 1980s. 'I wouldn't worry about the wireless industry yet, it's still relatively young,' he said. 'Just look how long it took the PC industry just to get to the point of standardized parallel cables.' "

Not to beat a dead horse, but the ebook industry is even younger than PCs, and PDAs have really only come into their own during the last few years. So don't count any of these technologies out just yet.
